They say you are the sum of the five people you spend the most time around.
When you take a moment to think about whom those five people would be, it should be pretty easy to identify that the people you spend the most time with are actually those you work with.
Let’s say I had a 9 to 5 job. I wake up at 7:30, clean myself up, and grab a meal before heading out the door around 8:30. I get to spend about fifteen minutes of time with my wife that we’re actually investing together before going to chase my dreams. The next 8 hours are likely going to be spent with those nearest my cubicle or on my immediate team. I get a lunch break where I can venture over to my wife’s place of work (which is luckily a brisk 10-minute trek), but I’ll usually go with two friends to a sandwich parlor around the corner!
Do you see where I’m going here? There’s a significant amount of time being spent at work. 40 hours a week is no small amount of time. In fact, it may be the place where you actually spend the most amount of time with others.
It matters where you work. If you’re around those who aren’t bringing out the best in you – or growing you – then it’s going to be extremely hard to stay happy in your toils and efforts. You work hard for the company and a paycheck, but you should also work hard to have good relationships with others.
Work thrives when the workplace is bumping with energy and joy. You want to be pleased with the idea of work, not make it the bane of your existence. Work is work, but it should be something you can still look forward to: if not for the job itself, at least the people you get to interact with.
Here’s an interesting statistic: when a workplace is happy it can see productivity jumps up to 20% (http://fortune.com/2015/10/29/happy-productivity-work/).
This happiness thing is no joke.
It’s hard enough finding a job that you enjoy, but asking for an environment where you can thrive as well? That might as well be fairytale in today’s world.
